The Bir Umm Fawakhir Project of the Oriental Institute completed a third season of archaeological survey in January 1996. The site of Bir Umm Fawakhir, in the rugged Precambrian mountains of the central Eastern Desert of Egypt, can now be identified as a fifth/sixth-century Coptic/Byzantine gold-mining town (fig. 1).
Human beings originated in Africa and, as a result, there is more diversity of human types and societies than anywhere else. It is not possible, in any non-ideological way, to claim any one of these peoples or societies as more essentially "African" than others; nor is it possible to exclude a given society as "not really African".
Pre-Byzantine remains at Bir Umm Fawakhir are limited. From the pharaonic period we have, perhaps, a few sherds and above all, the Turin Papyrus. The latter may be read as a map drawn up in the Twentieth Dynasty to show the bekhen-stone quarries in the Wadi Hammamat and the gold mines a little farther to the east at Bir Umm Fawakhir.

A papyrus map discovered around 1820 and now in the Egyptian Museum in Turin, Italy, illustrates the topography and geology of Wadi Hammamat in the mountains of the central Eastern Desert of Egypt. It accurately depicts the areal distribution of sedimentary and igneous/metamorphic rocks, which are shown as black and pink hills, respectively.
